China Study Tour Program Call for Applications

China Study Tour Program Call for Applications

The Office of the Vice President for Global Engagement (OVPGE) is now accepting applications from graduate students enrolled at Georgetown for a study tour program in China to take place June 2 through 12, 2018.  Application deadline is February 15, 2018.

The 10-day study tour will take students to Beijing, Shanghai, and a third city. Participants conduct site visits and meet with national and local government officials and leaders from business, society, and the academy. There will also be opportunities to exchange views with their student peers at leading Chinese universities.

Dennis Wilder, managing director with the Georgetown Initiative for U.S.-China Dialogue on Global Issues and professor of practice in the Asian Studies Program, will accompany the group during their visit in Beijing. This will be the second group of Georgetown students participating in this program, and the themes of the trip will be decided by Georgetown University. The first Georgetown group visited Beijing, Hangzhou, and Shanghai in June 2017 and held meetings with officials, business leaders, entrepreneurs, scholars, and students from a variety of organizations including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, Baidu Corporation, Alibaba Group, and Peking University, among others. You can read about their experience here. The program is organized by the China-United States Exchange Foundation in Hong Kong.

Eligibility

Applicant must be a full-time graduate student currently enrolled at Georgetown in possession of a U.S. passport or green card.

Expenses

Lodging, group meals, and transportation within China will be fully covered. Student participants are responsible for covering their own international travel and visa to China.

Application Procedure

Applicants should submit a C.V., a list of three references, and a 250 to 350 word personal statement that describes their background and interest in the program. All materials must be submitted to uschinadialogue@georgetown.edu by February 15, 2018. Selection will be made by a Georgetown faculty committee by the end of February. Only complete applications will be considered.

Requirements

Student participants will be required to take part in all study tour activities and to submit a 400 to 500 word report upon their return to the United States. These reports may be published on the foundation’s website and in Georgetown University materials.

The University's International Travel Policy requires that all students, faculty, and staff participating in GU-related travel have adequate international health insurance coverage. In particular, Georgetown expects that all travelers participating in a GU-sponsored program are covered under their health insurance for 1) emergency medical evacuation and 2) repatriation of remains. The university maintains a list of possible insurance providers.

Information Session

An information session for the program was held on Thursday, February 1, 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Maguire Hall, Room 303.
