The participants acknowledged that relations between the United States and China have been contentious over the past few years and that intensified economic, ideological, and security competition represents a significant threat to global prosperity and world peace. At the same time, participants discussed hopeful signs over the last few months, as President Xi and President Trump have established more regular communications and publicly expressed interest in improved relations. The upcoming meeting between the two will be an opportunity to seek common ground on trade and security issues, even as strategic competition persists.
