The Initiative for U.S.-China Dialogue was pleased to host U.S. House Representative Adam Smith (D-WA) for a conversation on U.S.-China relations moderated by Senior Fellow Evan Medeiros. Representative Smith discussed the importance of the U.S.-China relationship and how Congress has been thinking about China in recent years. He also shared insights from his recent congressional trip to China and meetings with senior Chinese officials. The discussion was followed by a lively Q&A session with Georgetown students and faculty.

Representative Adam Smith (D-WA) is the U.S. representative for Washington's 9th congressional district and currently serves as ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, where he was formerly chairman from 2019 to 2023. Smith also served on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Prior to joining Congress, Smith served as a prosecutor and was elected to the Washington State Senate.

Dr. Evan Medeiros (moderator) is the current director of Asian Studies, Penner Family Chair in Asia Studies in the School of Foreign Service, and a senior fellow with the Initiative for U.S.-China Dialogue on Global Issues at Georgetown University. He previously served for six years on the staff of the National Security Council as director for China, Taiwan and Mongolia, and then as special assistant to the president and senior director for Asia.
