Drawing on her extensive fieldwork, Dawn Murphy of the U.S. National War College highlighted key points from her book China’s Rise in the Global South: The Middle East, Africa, and Beijing’s Alternative World Order (2022). She analyzed China’s foreign policy approach to the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa through detailed case studies of the China-Arab States Cooperation Forum (CASCF), the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), China’s naval base in Djibouti, and China’s Belt and Road Initiative, among others.

This event was co-sponsored by Georgetown University’s Africa-China Initiative, African Studies and Asian Studies programs, and Center for Contemporary Arab Studies in the Walsh School of Foreign Service with the Initiative for U.S.-China Dialogue on Global Issues.
