The rapid spread of the coronavirus since the start of 2020 has seized the attention of the global community. Scientists are grappling to understand the virus and its transmission mechanisms, and health policy officials in China and around the world are seeking to care for its victims and contain its spread.
The Georgetown University Global Health Initiative convened scientific and policy experts Jennifer Huang Bouey, Rebecca Katz, John Monahan, and Erin Sorrell to examine these linked challenges and how best to address them in the weeks and months ahead.

Jennifer Huang Bouey is an associate professor of epidemiology and the Susan H. Mayer Professor for health equity at the Georgetown University School of Nursing and Health Studies, as well as a senior policy researcher and the Tang Chair in China Policy Studies at the RAND Corporation.
Rebecca Katz is a professor and director of the Center for Global Health Science and Security at Georgetown University. She is an expert on global health security, public health preparedness, and health diplomacy.
John Monahan is the senior advisor for global health to Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia, a senior fellow at the McCourt School of Public Policy, and a senior scholar at the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown University.
Erin Sorrell is an assistant research professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and a member of the Center for Global Health Science and Security at Georgetown University. She also directs the M.S. Program in Biohazardous Threats and Emerging Infectious Diseases.
