Philip Ivanhoe

Philip Ivanhoe is a professor and department chair of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Georgetown University. He is an historian of Chinese thought, particularly Confucianism and Neo-Confucianism. Ivanhoe is a co-convener of the Initiative for U.S.-China Dialogue on Global Issues Research Group on Cosmopolitanism.

  • Authored Confucian Moral Self Cultivation (2000) and Ethics in the Confucian Tradition: The Thought of Mengzi and Wang Yangming (2002).
  • Served as distinguished chair professor in the College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy at Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul, South Korea, and as director of the Sungkyun Institute for Confucian Studies and East Asian Philosophy.
