Responding To: A Reflection on Participation in the Research Group on Climate Change

Working with the Research Group on Climate Change

 Working with the Georgetown U.S.-China Research group on Climate Change has impacted my work a lot. It has led to a couple of very important by-products for me. The biggest one is that Professor Zhang Xiliang (Tsinghua University) and I are working on a paper on the Chinese carbon market; even before it has been written, it received a lot of attention. We presented it at the American Economic Association- ASSA annual conference in Philadelphia on a featured panel for the Chinese carbon market. We also hosted a follow-up panel event on January 8 in Washington to provide more information to stakeholders on developments in the Chinese carbon market. This research group created an opportunity to collaborate with someone I would not have otherwise worked with.

Through the research group dialogue, I also developed a deeper relationship with Professor Qi Shaozhou from Wuhan University, as he had completed some work on China’s pilot programs. He recommended Banban Wang, a former student at Wuhan University and faculty member at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, who is now visiting Duke for a year. Thanks to the research group meeting and a lot of contact with Shaozhou I was able to create an opportunity for Banban to visit the United States and collaborate on carbon market design issues.
