As part of its U.S.-China Dialogue 2020 event series, the initiative convened leading scholars and commentators on April 30, 2020 to discuss the evolving role of China in the U.S. Presidential Campaign. This blog contains edited excerpts from the virtual event, which featured E.J. Dionne (Georgetown University, Washington Post, Brookings Institution), Jia Qingguo (Peking University), Laura Silver (Pew Research Center), and Michael Green (Georgetown University).

The U.S.-China Relationship Under Stress Blog Post

In this blog post, the students were asked to reflect and write on the dynamics and challenges of the U.S.-China relationship during difficult times, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic. They considered a number of factors including the effects of increased competition on the bilateral relationship, the ongoing threats of economic decoupling as well as the economic strains of the COVID-19 epidemic on the global system, China’s relations with other great powers, and how the structure of the relationship between the United States and China over the past 40 years led to the situation we are in today.
